5 Ways to Make Time for Play

Katie Gebely Studio - Make time for Play

As we grow up, life gets increasingly more difficult. There is so much to do and manage, we couldn’t possibly have time to do something fun like jumping in puddles or painting a canvas, right?!

Well what if we shifted our thinking a bit and made more time to play and be creative? It’s becoming more and more apparent that, even as adults, making time to do something for ourselves decreases stress, promotes wellness and just makes us happier.

Some of us may naturally play more often because we have young children at home, but we should take that even further and play for ourselves! This can include taking up a hobby, going for a run, reading a book or even just meditating. Whatever “play” looks like to you, is the thing you need to do more of!

Here are a few ways to get play back into our lives…

  1. Give yourself permission to do something for yourself. The dishes will get done, the laundry can wait. What we need more of, is making time (even a few moments here and there) to do things we love, which means acknowledging that we need time for ourselves.

  2. Mark your calendar. It’s sometimes hard to navigate our busy schedules, so making time in our calendar will help ensure we take the time we need so do the fun things! It’s a simple as, 1 hour of (insert fun activity) each week, done!

  3. Mimic the kids. I am a strong believer that children are so wise in their curiosity, freedom in play and fearlessness. Let’s learn to play like them again. Get messy, run around, pick up acorns, paint rocks, throw a ball, forget rules and just have fun!

  4. Watch Ellen. I know, this one is a bit silly, but seriously, who has more fun on TV than Ellen? And she’s a very successful adult, right?! She encourages play and laughter and kindness. Her show is as clear as it gets in showing that a bit of play can be contagious and healthy!

  5. Remember that life is short and in the end, I think we’d all agree that we wished we had set aside more time to have fun.
